Extractions Q & A
Why does my child need to have a tooth extracted?
While Dr. Sara does everything possible to avoid extracting your child’s tooth, there are times when the tooth may be doing more harm than good to your child’s overall dental health. For example:
- The tooth is severely decayed and unsalvageable
- The tooth is cracked or broken beyond repair
- There’s overcrowding in your child’s mouth
- The tooth is causing pain
- Your child’s gums may be affected
- The decay in your child’s baby tooth may reach the permanent teeth developing underneath
When it comes to baby teeth, Dr. Sara typically bases her recommendation to extract upon whether it helps you avoid more dental work down the road.
How is the extraction performed?
As with all the dental procedures at her office, one of Dr. Sara’s primary concerns is the comfort of your child. Thanks to her welcoming treatment rooms — which house TV screens for distraction — and her capable and friendly staff, Dr. Sara can perform an extraction as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Depending upon the situation, Dr. Sara performs the extraction using either local anesthesia or nitrous oxide. She reviews her plan ahead of time with you to choose the best option for your child.
Once your child is comfortable, Dr. Sara quickly removes the tooth, down to the root, ensuring that any surrounding infectious tissue or decay also is removed.
What happens after the extraction?
After the procedure, Dr. Sara sends you home with complete instructions for the at-home care of the site of the extraction. These guidelines include:
- Gauze compresses
- Recommendations to encourage clotting
- Taking prescribed or over-the-counter medications
- Dietary instructions
What are space maintainers?
One of the primary jobs of baby teeth is to hold the place where permanent teeth come in. If your child needs a baby tooth extracted, or has a lost a tooth prematurely, Dr. Sara provides a custom-made space maintainer to hold the space to prevent other teeth from crowding the area.
If your child needs to have a tooth extracted, trust the capable staff at Caughlin Ranch Children’s Smiles to do the job right. Call or book an appointment online to learn more.
