Dental Crowns Q and A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a cap that Dr. Sara places over a severely compromised tooth to save your child’s tooth and protect the tooth’s underlying structure. Crowns are used for teeth that are:

  • Severely decayed
  • Unable to support a filling
  • Broken or cracked
  • Discolored

Crowns are custom made out of stainless steel, porcelain, ceramic, or a metal/porcelain mix.

Why does my child need a crown?

The most significant advantage to using crowns is that Dr. Sara is often able to save your child’s tooth from extraction. By preserving the tooth, Dr. Sara prevents the impact a missing tooth can have on your child’s mouth, including:

  • Bone loss
  • Shifting teeth
  • Problems chewing or speaking
  • Misalignments in your child’s teeth and jawline

Ultimately, Dr. Sara’s efforts to save your child’s tooth deliver enormous benefits to your child’s overall health.

Can baby teeth be crowned?

While your child’s baby teeth, or primary teeth, are temporary, for several years they play a critical role in your child’s development by:

  • Enabling chewing
  • Promoting proper speech
  • Holding the place for permanent teeth

If your child has a primary tooth that’s compromised in any way, or under threat of decay, Dr. Sara may recommend placing a stainless steel crown over the tooth to enable your child’s oral progression to continue uninterrupted.

The custom-made crown holds the tooth in place until it’s ready to come out and make way for the permanent tooth. When that happens, the crown falls out with it.

What if my child doesn’t need a full crown?

After a full examination, Dr. Sara sits down to review what options are available to you. If the tooth is strong enough to hold a filling, Dr. Sara offers two types:

Dr. Sara turns to composite fillings for teeth that are readily visible since these fillings mimic the natural color of your child’s teeth.

Between fillings and crowns, there are several ways to preserve your child’s natural teeth. To learn more, call Caughlin Ranch Children’s Smiles, or book an appointment online.
